Yes, acupuncture is safe for children and adults (including pregnant people!) when practiced by a licensed professional. All licensed acupuncturists/TCM practitioners in the US are required to complete a 3-4 year Master's Degree. Acupuncture needles used in practice today are very fine and solid, sterilized, and single-use. We are certified in Clean Needle Technique as a part of the requirements of Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (CCAHM) certification.

Generally, the brief sensation upon needle insertion feels similar to a mosquito bite, and subsides very quickly within a moment or two. Most clients have no adverse reaction to acupuncture. Cupping, gua sha, and needling can occasionally leave bruise-like marks on the skin that generally disappear within a few days. Sometimes numbness or swelling can occur, or a drop of blood might appear at a point or two when the needle is removed. Sometimes herbal medicine has an unpleasant taste. Most side effects normalize very quickly.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing, avoid wearing heavy perfumes, eat something substantial within an hour of treatment, and come well hydrated.
At your first visit, we’ll go over your health history in depth, and together we’ll develop a treatment plan that you are comfortable with. If you are receiving an all inclusive acupuncture and Chinese medicine treatment, you may have acupuncture with a combination of some adjunctive physical therapies such as moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, e-stim, trigger point needling or herbal medicine. If you are having a restorative acupuncture appointment, you’ll receive classical acupuncture needling only.
Our rooms are soothing and dimly lit, with soft relaxing music playing in the background to support your acu-nap deep relaxation. You will disrobe to your comfort level, and we have sheets for draping, and the option of table warmers, and heat lamps for the best temperature. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine work cumulatively and usually render optimal benefits when administered over a period of time. The number of treatments needed varies, depending on the severity and duration of the condition being treated. For acute conditions, as little as 1-3 treatments may be needed, while chronic conditions may require several weeks or months of treatment. On average, 4-6 regular treatments are suggested to start, and the treatment plan is adjusted according to progress made. For menstrual cycle regulation, fertility and pregnancy support, a minimum of 3-6 months of treatment is recommended. Acupuncture is also a preventive medicine, and some clients enjoy receiving acupuncture wellness visits on a regular or occasional basis after their initial main complaint has been resolved.
